Siblings Day

National Siblings Day was April 10, so I'm a little late with this posting.  But in honor of the day I'd like to share a photo of my grandmother and grandfather with her siblings.

In this undated photo my grandmother, Mary Ferry Hanlin, is standing in the top row, the third woman from the left.  Her husband, Harrison Hanlin, is the third man from the left in the top row.  Based on comparisons to other identified photos I know that the second woman from the left in the top row is Mary's sister Blanche.  Standing on the other side of Mary is her sister Elmeda.

Mary Ferry Hanlin had four sisters, Blanche, Elmeda, Mae and Nettie, and four brothers, Lawrence, Ambrose, Charles and John.

Any cousins out there who can identify the other people in the photo?  I'd love to hear from you.

  1. Hi Debbie. I've been trying to post a comment several times but haven't seemed to be able. My name is Bruce Shaw and Blanche Ferry Ambrose was my grandmother. She past away in 1999. I'm not positive, but I think the man on the top row furthest to the left was her husband, George Dewey Ambrose. I think Grandma Ambrose also had a copy of this photograph. If so, my sister may now have it. I will check and see, and see if there are any names written on it (a lot of Grandma's photographs have names on them).

    1. Thank you, Bruce! It would be wonderful to identify other folks in the photo. I have several other photos of what appear to be Ferry gatherings that may or may not be in your family. I'm happy to share.

It's lovely to hear from a (second) cousin

    2. Hi again Debbie. Reading your blog entries has brought back some memories. In the mid-1980s I did some ancestor research and spent a lot of time talking with my grandmother about her siblings. She also had a family Bible, which I think was her parents, with records of family births, marriages, and deaths. Perhaps you already know this, but William and Sarah had another child, their second, that that died at either childbirth or within the first year. He was named Leroy Burton Ferry and was born and died in 1880. I had the family Bible but I believe my brother now has it now. I will let you know when I locate it.

  2. Debbie. I want to let you know that I have our great grandparent's Bible that I believe was given to them when they were married. My grandmother had it and when she passed away my mother got it. Bound in the Bible are pages that record births, deaths, and marriages. It also contains a church marriage certificate of William and Sarah. Did you know that William and Sarah had another child (Leroy Burton Ferry) that was born January 18, 1880 and died on March 3, 1880. I will try to photograph pages and send them to you.

  3. Bruce, I didn't know about this sibling. Thanks for sharing that information.

  4. Bruce, how exciting that you have the family Bible! I would very much appreciate a copy of whatever you can photograph. I have William and Sarah's marriage year as 1877, but no month or day. You can email me directly at
If it is easier to send paper copies, please email me for my address. I have some photos I'd be happy to email to you, as well.
